Customers love that our kitchens are ‘built to last’. Here’s what this means to them.

When people talk about a kitchen lasting, they often mean the doors still close properly, the worktops still look good, or the cabinets remain sturdy and fit for purpose.

Last month, we launched a competition to find Suffolk’s oldest House of Harmony kitchen to celebrate our anniversary. We were delighted to find the oldest original kitchen, which was installed 34 years ago.

But what stood out to us most when talking to some of our long-standing customers is not the fact that so many of our original House of Harmony kitchens are still in use, but the ongoing perception that our kitchens have been ‘built to last’. Their stories revealed kitchens that have survived changing fashions, have supported growing families, enjoyed countless celebrations and kept up with the pressures of everyday life, while still being loved by the people who use them.

A kitchen that is built to last means exceptional quality

For many of our longest customers, the first thing they told us was that they appreciated the quality of our materials and the craftsmanship that goes into designing and installing a kitchen.

The winning kitchen was installed in 1992, and the winners told us that they still enjoy using it today. While they considered changing it kitchen a few years ago, they ultimately decided to keep it because they value its solid wood craftsmanship and lasting quality.

Mrs Chambers echoes a similar sentiment. Installed in 2001, her kitchen has required remarkably little maintenance over the years.

She says,

“We had a lot of units in our kitchen, and integrated appliances that were installed at the same time. Amazingly, although we’ve replaced the taps, our original integrated fridge, freezer and single oven are still going strong! I don’t plan to change it because it still works perfectly fine at the moment, and we’ve taken good care of it. It just proves how well the kitchens were made in the first place.”

A kitchen that is built to last means outlasting fashionable trends

One of the most interesting themes that emerged during our conversations with customers was how many people have never felt pressured to replace their kitchens simply because fashions changed. As you can imagine, over 45 years, we’ve seen it all, from the avocado bathroom suites to the love of grey kitchens and open-plan spaces.

But what our customers tell us is that something that is built to last becomes timeless.

Mrs Taggart chose an oak kitchen and believes its ageless design is one reason it has endured.

“We wanted to go for an oak kitchen because we wanted a kitchen that would last, and it has! Amazingly, we’ve never had to change the hinges, knobs, or anything else over the years, which shows how well-made it is. At times I have toyed with the idea of updating it, but it’s never felt right, environmentally speaking, to rip out something that’s still in such good condition. We still really like it, and I think wood will come back into fashion.”

Likewise, Mrs Cotter loved her 1995 kitchen so much that rather than replacing it entirely, she chose to refresh it.

“Because it was such good quality, we couldn’t bring ourselves to replace it, but we wanted something a little more modern. We kept all the carcasses on the walls, removed the doors, and asked a local company to respray them for us. It’s really transformed the kitchen, and we love it.”

Her story demonstrates an increasingly popular approach: updating a much loved kitchen rather than starting from scratch.

A kitchen that is built to last means coping with everyday family life

We know that a kitchen isn’t simply furniture or a room where we cook. It’s the heart of the house, where life happens.

When we spoke to our customers, many shared memories tied to their kitchens. They talked about how these spaces have remained at the centre of family life for entire generations.

One customer remembers Christmas gatherings where family members would inevitably congregate in the kitchen.

She says,

“We’ve got a lot of memories in this kitchen. Every Christmas, people would pile in while I was trying to get things done, but that’s always been good fun.”

Mrs Taggart’s kitchen has seen three boys grow up.

“It’s coped with three growing boys and all their friends as they grew up.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Chambers reflects that after more than two decades,

“there are lots of family stories to tell.”

A kitchen that is built to last means being loved as much now as when it was first installed

Perhaps the strongest theme wasn’t that these kitchens were still standing. It was that their owners still genuinely love them.

Mrs Dobson’s kitchen was installed in 2006 and remains exactly what she wanted.

She says,

“I still love everything about it. It always looks fresh and always looks clean. There’s nothing wrong with it, so I’d never want to replace it. It was my first kitchen I could choose and design, and I still love it and still get compliments from visitors.”

As kitchen specialists, we think that this is the clearest measure of a successful kitchen.

A successful kitchen should be more than one that is still functional on the walls; it should be one that, decades later, still gives homeowners exactly what they wanted when they first chose it.

When we speak about kitchens built to last, we’re not just talking about solid timber, durable hinges, or quality craftsmanship. Those things are important, but what matters more is that you have a kitchen that grows with your family, adapts to changing tastes and continues to be loved year after year.

From 1992 through the mid-2000s and beyond, our customers’ stories share a common theme we’re incredibly proud of. A well-made kitchen is never just a purchase; it’s part of the family home for generations.
